What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation (or SEO for short) is an internet marketing strategy aimed at improving the volume of traffic a website gets from search engines. Essentially, a site with a good SEO will appear earlier on the list of results for a keyword search, generating greater traffic to that site.

So why be interested in SEO?

SEO is a powerful tool used to drive traffic towards your website. Its potential for advertisers lies in its ability to increase awareness of a brand and hence generate greater sales.

How does SEO work?

Each search engine operates differently, but the principle remains the same. Employing SEO strategies will help the search engines to better recognise your site as an important source of information regarding a product or service. The more importance that your site has placed on it, the higher up in the search results it will appear.

So, should you own a retail store selling canopies, it will benefit you if someone searched for canopies in a search engine, that your page be the first result. Anyone with an interest in canopies is likely to click the link to your website first, giving you an advantage over your competitors.

So why visit whoisian.com?

Originally, the brainchild of a bored uni student, whoisian.com is a convoluted plot by its founder, Ian Fernandes, to go from someone completely unknown to someone who is famous. How he does this will be detailed and catalogued on this site.

Once complete, all data will be organised so that anyone starting their site will be able to apply the simple to follow instructions to make themselves, or their proud work, popular too.

Update: As of today, the 21st of April 2009, whoisian.com is #6 on the google result for the search of Ian Fernandes.

whoisian.com is a personal project in SEO written and researched by Ian Fernandes. Each week a new update will bring a new step to slowly evolve the SEO of the site that has been undertaken by Ian.

The object of this project is to help others who have perhaps just launched their first site and are interested in bringing it to the forefront of their respective field. My final goal is to create a step-by-step process which any budding website enthusiast can follow to help popularise their site.
